Rose the Bear thriving in new home!
An update on our sponsored Bear cub in Cambodia...
As some of you may remember, back in the autumn of 2009 Red Rose Chain adopted a Bear cub in Cambodia. 'Rose', along with her brother, was saved from a cruel existence at the hands of illegal traders by Free The Bears, a worldwide charity dedicated to the conservation, protection and rescue of Bears from captivity and abuse.
We recently received a heartwarming update about Rose's new life from Matt Hunt, the CEO and SE Asia Programme Manager for Free The Bears:
"Rose and her brother James have recently been moved to a bigger Moon bear nursery area and have also been mixed in with Lily, a lovely little female who was brought into our sanctuary in May last year. The three cubs all get on great together and Lily is much more confident with people, so some of this confidence is slowly rubbing off on Rose and James and they are becoming much more bold. Their injuries, so horrific when they arrived, have all healed now and despite having lost part of her limbs Rose is very adept at clambering around her jumbo climbing frame and stealing the hammock from her brother! They are also growing extremely well, with Rose now weighing in at more than 40kg!"
Fantastic as it is to hear about Rose's excellent progress, the cruel and illegal trade in Bears continues today. As Matt explains:
"We’ve had a busy year in Cambodia with four more Moon bear cubs arriving at our sanctuary in the past year alone, the story behind all these cubs is the same with hunters ripping them from the forest and trying to sell them across the Cambodian borders into a life of pain and misery in bear bile farms. Although we are obviously glad whenever we manage to rescue another bear it is saddening to think that the trade in bears is still ongoing and threatens their survival in Indochina."
