From a hoax to a reality at Red Rose Chain

The Suffolk bear hoax has become a reality! After the excitement and success of The Winter's Tale, Red Rose Chain have adopted their very own bear cub in Cambodia named Rose. She was rescued by the 'Save The Bears' charity and is now well on her way to recovery...

Earlier this year, people across the globe were gripped by sightings of a wild bear roaming Rendlesham Forest in Suffolk. Five months on, Ipswich based Red Rose Chain Film and Theatre Company now have their very own real life grizzly bear cub, which they have aptly named ‘Rose’.

Last April Red Rose Chain set up a promotional hoax to launch their Theatre In The Forest production of ‘The Winter’s Tale’. The play features the famous Shakespearean stage direction; ‘Exit, pursued by a bear.’ The pretend Youtube clips created a sensation and were clearly very successful. Red Rose Chain sold over 9000 tickets for Theatre In The Forest 2009, smashing all box office sales for previous years.

Red Rose Chain teamed up this year with worldwide charity ‘Free The Bears’ to help raise awareness and financial support for neglected and endangered bears in countries like Cambodia and India. Through the huge success of Theatre In The Forest project 2009, Red Rose Chain have been able to raise the funds to sponsor their very own bear cub in Cambodia.

Rose and her brother were rescued from certain death when a trader hog-tied them to wooden poles whilst he attempted to sell them. Now, they are both safe and well on their way to recovery thanks to the ‘Free The Bears’ charity.

Joanna Carrick, Artistic Director of Red Rose Chain said, ‘the team at ‘Free The Bears’ are delighted with such a fantastic result at their first ever fundraising event in the UK and Red Rose Chain feel honoured to have been able to help such a worthwhile charity.’
